The famous battle of Waterloo took place in the year 1815 a date that was well known in the western world, when the song Waterloo was performed at the Eurovision song contest it raised a few eye brows !

The Song written by Benny and Bjorn was chosen
against Hasta Manana by Stig Anderson ABBA`s manager, Bjorn and Benny wrote lyrics which compared the French emperors surrender to a women's romantic surrender to a lover.

The lyrics were punchy and cheerful and to add to this they had special costumes designed for the occasion and the orchestra conductor was persuaded to dress as Napoleon for the Occasion.

With all this in place, a good song bright clothes, and Bjorn’s
Guitar in the shape of a star they were ready to take on
Europe
or even the world!

Stig Anderson the Business man that he was, made sure that all of his contacts, knew about
Waterloo and he made sure, that the song was released in a number of countries around Europe before the contest
took place.

The British entry was Sung by Olivia Newton-John. Olivia being a favourite was tipped to win, however ABBA made it, outstripping all the others, Waterloo became very popular and topped the British charts, also getting into the top 10 in the USA which is an achievement by any standards.

The Eurovision song contest had  always been regarded as a joke throughout Europe and the UK , and because  ABBA found it difficult to gain a foot hold on pop stardom as the Public were not taking them seriously, and at that time nothing of any substance had come out the the Eurovision song contest they all seemed to be one hit wonders.

It seemed to be that while any song that had won the Eurovision contest might be a hit in
Europe, that particular artist was unlikely to have another hit to even grace the charts.

ABBA
changed the face of pop history, at first it looked that they were going to be one hit wonders like  all of the others, but this was not to be they followed up Waterloo with Ring Ring the song that the judges rejected a year earlier and totally ignored by the British public a few months before, but worse was to come, So Long  was released just before Christmas it was probably better than Ring
Ring but it totally failed in the UK.

Then came Honey Honey which was a hit in the UK but not for
ABBA a group called Sweet Dreams took the track to No10 in the UK charts.
