Saturday evening 27 July 2013 saw the concluding concert for Benny Anderson's Orchestra BAO, which was held at Skansen in Stockholm, it was a fantastic mid summers evening and myself and my family arrived at Skansen around 5:30 pm my 22 year old son Callum did not know what to expect even though he's an ABBA fan! As it was my 50th birthday we had travelled to Stockholm for a holiday and to see the newly opened ABBA museum, we had worked it out so we could see BAO at Skansen during our visit.
When we arrived there was already quite a crowd queuing up inside the park waiting to go into the little arena to listen to this fantastic concert by some of Sweden's top classical musicians.. The gates opened and the arena filled up quickly as over 2000 people took their places, as we wanted a good view we decided to stand inside towards the left of the stage.
In the grounds I found a little stand which was selling BAO DVD'S CD'S and some signed posters of the event that were signed by Helen, Tommy, Kalle and of course the man himself Benny. I asked if I could get my BAO post card signed and they sent it backstage for Benny to sign, it came back signed in gold pen that really made my night!
This was not only my first time in Stockholm but it was my first time at a BAO Concert so I was unsure really of what to expect, I'd seen a few things on YouTube but I wasn't sure of how the live experience was going to be, the concert started prompt at 7 pm opening with the brilliant number Glasgow Boogie which got the crowd going, many more numbers followed too many to list to be honest.
Some of the highlights for me were the ABBA tracks like Why did it have to be Me, hasta Mañana, Kisses of Fire and the stunning One Man One Women, having already seen Helen Sjöholm in Kristina at the Royal Albert Hall in London I knew what to expect, Helen's voice was just on top form she is a star performer of the highest quality, and along with Tommy Körberg and Kalle Moraeus a fantastic night of fine music and dance was to be had by all.
The Orsa fiddlers were just stunning they produce such a big sound and along with Benny on the piano Helen Tommy Kalle and the rest of the band it was just an unforgettable evening.
Tommy Körberg took the lead on some of the tracks along with Helen and Kalle, some BAO tracks that stood out for me were “Bortom Sol Och Mane” from Benny & Bjorn's new musical Hjälp Sökes, You are my Man, if this is our last dance and of course Story of a Heart. My son Callum's favorite track was Cadillac and he remarked it had a great beat and a fantastic rhythm.
Benny was set on people dancing to the music and encouraged people to dance and leave room for people who are dancing!
The whole concert was vibrant and lasted for over 3 hours and it went so quickly as all of the tracks that were played were so indulgent time just ran away, altogether a totally fantastic night with stunning music and a great atmosphere, would I go again to see BAO abbasolutley Yes!
